Yes. We visit, measure up, check levels and drainage, and then send a written, itemised quote. There’s no charge and no obligation, and we’re happy to talk through options if you’re weighing up materials or budgets.

Often not, provided the surface is permeable or drains to a lawn or border within your property. If you are covering more than five square metres of a front garden with a surface that sheds water onto the road, you will usually need permission. Listed buildings and conservation areas can have extra rules. We will flag anything we think needs checking with your council.

Neither is better in every case. Porcelain is low-maintenance and consistent, which suits modern homes and anyone who wants an easy-clean surface. Sandstone has natural character and a softer look, but it weathers and may need sealing and cleaning. We are happy to bring samples so you can compare them in your own garden.

Usually not, if it stays within permitted development limits: up to one metre high next to a road or footpath and up to two metres elsewhere. Listed buildings, conservation areas and some estates have tighter rules, so check if either applies to you.

There is no single legal cut-off, but walls much above a metre, or any wall holding up a structure, driveway or steep slope, should be designed by a structural engineer. Soil type, water and loads all change what is needed. We will advise when we see the site.

Yes. We talk through what you want, measure up and put together a practical layout covering paving, walls, beds and lawn. It is a builder's design rather than a planting plan, so if you have a garden designer's drawings we are also happy to build from those.

A good product on a well-built base typically lasts many years, depending on how heavily it is used and how much sun it gets. The base is the part that usually decides how long it looks good, which is why we do not cut corners there.

Generally up to two metres without planning permission, or one metre where it is next to a road or footpath used by vehicles. Rules can differ for listed buildings, conservation areas and some newer estates, so it is worth checking if any of those apply.

It depends on the soil, nearby trees and what is being built. For extensions, building control will confirm the minimum depth, and on clay near trees it can be considerably deeper than on firm ground. We dig to what the ground and inspector require.

Not always. Many single-storey rear extensions are allowed under permitted development within size limits, sometimes with a prior approval process. Larger, two-storey or side extensions, and homes in conservation areas, usually need permission. Your council or designer can confirm what applies to your home.
