Ragstone, Gault and Weald Clay

Maidstone sits on a real geological crossroads. North of the town the chalk of the Downs drains well. The town itself stands on the Hythe Beds of the Lower Greensand — the source of Kentish ragstone — with a band of sticky Gault clay just to the north. South towards Headcorn, Marden and Staplehurst it becomes Weald Clay, which swells in wet winters and shrinks in dry summers. On clay we dig deeper, use a thicker compacted sub-base and pay close attention to falls and drainage so the surface doesn't sink or pond.

Maidstone town centre, Loose village and valley, and village centres such as Sutton Valence, Headcorn and Hollingbourne include conservation areas. Front boundary changes and demolition of walls can need consent there.
