Ground conditions
Chalk valley, Blean clay and coastal ground
Canterbury lies in the Stour valley on chalk, with river gravels and alluvium along the Stour itself. North of the city, the Blean woods and the coast at Whitstable and Herne Bay sit on London Clay, which drains slowly and moves with the seasons — the soft cliffs between Herne Bay and Reculver show how unstable it can be. South of the city the chalk rises into the Downs. We adjust sub-base depth and drainage to whichever of these we find.

A city of conservation areas
Canterbury has many conservation areas — the walled city, Whitstable town, Tankerton, Herne Bay's seafront, and villages like Bridge, Fordwich and Wickhambreaux — plus Article 4 directions in some streets that remove normal permitted development rights. Check before changing a front boundary or paving over a front garden.
Flint and brick
Flint walls, often with brick quoins and lacing courses, are part of the character of Canterbury and its villages. Repairing or building flint walling takes patience, and we match knapped or cobble flint and mortar to the existing work.
Coastal conditions
Whitstable, Tankerton and Herne Bay get strong onshore winds and salt spray. We use concrete fence posts, corrosion-resistant fixings and porcelain or dense natural stone that copes well with exposure.
