Royal Tunbridge Wells is known for its Regency and Victorian villas, and the surrounding borough for its High Weald villages — Cranbrook, Goudhurst, Hawkhurst, Lamberhurst, Benenden — with tile-hung and weatherboarded cottages, oast houses and large country homes. Paddock Wood and Southborough add newer estates and inter-war housing.

Ground conditions
Wealden sandstone and clay
Tunbridge Wells sits on the Hastings Beds of the High Weald — alternating sandstones and clays — which is why sandstone outcrops such as High Rocks and Toad Rock appear around the town. Ground can switch from free-draining sand to wet clay within a single garden, and slopes are common. Around Paddock Wood and the Medway valley it becomes Weald Clay and river alluvium. We dig trial areas where needed and size the sub-base and drainage to the ground we actually find.

Conservation areas and the High Weald
Tunbridge Wells town centre (including the Pantiles and Calverley areas) has a large conservation area, and villages such as Cranbrook, Goudhurst, Lamberhurst and Benenden have their own. Most of the rural borough lies in the High Weald National Landscape. Visible walls, piers and driveways are expected to respect local character.
Weald building materials
Local houses use sandstone, soft red brick, clay tile-hanging and white weatherboarding. For boundary walls and paths we can work in brick or sandstone to match, and we're happy to use reclaimed materials where the house calls for it.
Paddock Wood and low ground
Paddock Wood, Five Oak Green and Capel are on flat, low-lying land near the Medway and its tributaries. Permeable surfaces and well-planned drainage are especially important there to avoid ponding.
